Why is my freezer freezing everything solid?

Garage freezers in a heat wave

Many of the chest and upright freezers we service live in garages — and an uninsulated Valley garage can pass 110°F during a July heat wave. Most standard freezers are rated for ambient temperatures only up to about 110°F; past that, the compressor runs continuously, condenser coils shed heat poorly, and marginal door gaskets give up. Warm, humid air slips past the seal, frost blankets the walls, and the food load starts to soften. If your garage freezer frosts heavily or runs nonstop every summer, the door gasket and condenser coils are the first two things we check — both are inexpensive fixes compared to a heat-stressed compressor.

Diagnostic-first approach

Before any work, we diagnose. The service call is $85, credited toward the repair when you proceed. After diagnosis you get a flat-rate written quote — never an open-ended hourly bill. If we recommend against repair (a $600 compressor on a $400 chest freezer, for example), we say so directly.

A documented case: freezer stopped freezing

On a built-in KitchenAid in Los Angeles, the freezer stopped freezing and the fresh food side was starting to warm up too. Low pressure led to an electronic leak search; we found the leak on the bottom bend of the evaporator, where the aluminum tubing had worn through against the defrost heater. A warm freezer alone doesn’t confirm a leak, a compressor, or a defrost failure. Before you call, note whether the refrigerator side is also warm, whether the unit runs nonstop, what the display shows, and whether there is frost or water; send a photo of the model number. Keep the door closed and move food to a safe cold place if it starts to thaw.

Sealed-system and refrigerant work

Many serious freezer faults are sealed-system problems — refrigerant leaks, restricted lines, or compressor failure.
