Freezer / Ice Maker DIY First

Whirlpool E1 — Whirlpool Ice Maker E1 — Ice Maker Sensor / Harvest Error

What This Code Means

The ice maker's harvest cycle failed — either the mold heater did not warm the ice mold enough to release cubes, or the harvest sensor detected no ice movement during ejection.

Common Causes

  • Freezer temperature too low or too warm for proper ice harvest (optimal: 0°F / -18°C)
  • Failed ice maker harvest heater
  • Ice jam in the ice maker mold
  • Water inlet valve not filling the mold completely

DIY Steps to Try First

  1. Check the freezer temperature — it should be 0°F (-18°C). Temperatures below -5°F can impair ice harvest.
  2. Lift the ice maker arm to Off, wait 10 seconds, lower to On — this triggers a manual harvest cycle on most Whirlpool models.
  3. Check the water supply: is the line frozen? Feel the supply line behind the fridge — if it's stiff/cold, the line may be frozen.
