One head down, and the remote already knew why

A Daikin mini split flagged J9 straight from the indoor unit's remote. The rest was a multimeter and a resistance comparison.

Watch: a real Los Angeles repair

One head down, and the remote already knew why

One of the indoor heads on this Daikin mini split had stopped working. Before touching a panel or a gauge, I went for the remote.

That’s not laziness. Daikin builds a self-check into these systems, and it runs from the handset of the unit that’s acting up. A few button presses beat opening equipment on a hunch.

The remote already knew

I started diagnostics from the indoor unit’s remote and it came back with J9 — the outdoor gas pipe thermistor circuit. That narrowed the whole job before a single screw came out.

A code like this names the circuit, not the exact sensor. J9 told me a thermistor in that circuit had gone out of range. Which one was still my problem to find.

Finding the bad sensor by comparison

I unplugged the sensor harness and put the multimeter on every thermistor at the connector.

A thermistor is a temperature-dependent resistor. Its exact value depends on the sensor type and how warm it is, so instead of hunting through resistance charts, I use the sensors against each other. They sit in the same equipment at close to the same temperature, and healthy ones should read in the same neighborhood.

Most of them did: around 28,000 ohms, one after another. Then the bottom sensor. 500 ohms, off by a factor of more than fifty.

That’s the whole diagnosis. I never opened a spec sheet, because a row of matching readings makes the odd one impossible to miss.

One harness, one order

Daikin sells these thermistors as a single harness, so the repair covers the whole set. I ordered the OEM harness from the dealer, swapped the full set, and restarted the system.

The indoor head came back online. Parts list: one harness.

When the machine tells you what’s wrong

This one stayed simple because the code told me where to start. If one head of your mini split drops out, pull the error code from that unit’s remote before assuming the worst — it’s the cheapest step in the whole process, and it takes no tools.

If the code points somewhere that needs a meter and an OEM part, that’s our lane. We repair mini splits and HVAC across Los Angeles alongside our appliance work. Flat rate upfront, and the $85 service call is credited toward the repair. Call or text (213) 205-2055.

FAQ

What does the J9 code mean on a Daikin mini split?

On this system it pointed to the outdoor gas pipe thermistor circuit. That's a sensor fault, not a compressor or refrigerant problem. The code names the circuit; confirming which sensor actually failed takes a multimeter at the harness connector.

How do you run diagnostics on a Daikin mini split?

From the remote of the indoor unit that's having the problem. Daikin builds the error check into the handset, so you start it there and read the stored code without opening anything up.

How do you test a mini split thermistor with a multimeter?

Unplug the sensor harness and measure resistance across each thermistor right at the connector. Sensors sitting at close to the same temperature should read near one another. On this Daikin most measured around 28,000 ohms and one measured 500, and that outlier was the failure.

What resistance should a Daikin thermistor read?

It depends on the sensor and its temperature, which is why I compare instead of memorizing charts. Identical thermistors in the same conditions should land close together. A reading of 500 ohms next to a row of 28,000-ohm readings doesn't need a spec sheet to be called bad.

Can you replace just one thermistor on a Daikin mini split?

Daikin sells these sensors as one harness, so the set gets replaced together. That's how the OEM part comes from the dealer, and it means every sensor in that circuit is new after the repair.

Is a J9 error something I can check myself?

Reading the code from the remote costs you nothing, and it's worth doing before you call anyone. The multimeter work and the OEM harness swap are where we come in. Call or text (213) 205-2055.
